Zombies at 200: The Inhuman Humanity, 2019.

Exhibition Design & Planning, in collaboration with Erik Marcinik

Zombies, the fictional undead being created through the reanimation of a human corpse, have a profound cultural impact on the people’s image of the horror genre, the entertainment industry, and even our colloquial linguistics. Gradually, zombies grew into a specific subculture genre that has its own features and there are two major cultural depictions of the zombies represented by Western and Eastern society, which are different in various aspects due to the diversities of history, religions, aesthetics, and folk customs between the West and the East.

The year 2019 is the bicentennial of the creation of the word “zombie” in English, which was first recorded in 1819, in a history of Brazil by the poet Robert Southey. Coincidentally, the Chinese word “Jiangshi” that referred to the zombie as a monster was first used from 1789 to 1798. In both cultures, zombies symbolize a kind of contemporary fear within people. The display of an exhibition themed with zombies would be a great opportunity for the public to know the history of zombie culture and also to be morbidly fascinating and tap into a very popular phenomenon.

The exhibition will inform visitors of the history and origins of the word zombie in the beginning sections, as well as the horror icon itself. The objective of this exhibit is to illustrate the cultural evolution of the zombie and the broad impact on popular culture that zombie has made in a visually appealing way to the public. The following parts of the exhibition will look at the comparisons of two different cultures. The content of the exhibit will be organized chronologically along a dual path representing the western and eastern manifestation of the zombie.

The zombie paradoxically possesses both human and non-human qualities, which compels us to ask the introspective question, “what does it mean to be human?” As a metaphysical aspect of zombies will be explored in the exhibit as a reflection of humanity, the exhibit aims to give the visitor a more cathartic outlook on the zombies as complex cultural inventions by humans rather than just scary monsters.
